Oil and chip paving, also known as tar and chip paving or chip seal paving, is a cost-effective alternative to traditional asphalt paving. It involves the application of a layer of hot liquid asphalt to a prepared base, followed by the placement of small, uniformly sized stone chips or gravel onto the asphalt.
Here's how the oil and chip paving process works:
Preparation: The area to be paved is prepared by grading and compacting the existing surface.
Application of liquid asphalt: Hot liquid asphalt is applied to the prepared surface with a spray truck.
Application of stone chips: Immediately after the liquid asphalt is applied, small, uniformly sized stone chips or gravel are spread over the asphalt using a spreader truck.
Compaction: The stone chips are then compacted into the asphalt using a roller or other compaction equipment, creating a rough, textured surface.
Finishing: After the initial compaction, excess stone chips are swept away, and the surface is sealed with a final layer of asphalt.
